Restoring Vital Infrastructure: Glenn Industrial Group’s Underwater Repairs in Suriname

As Suriname’s industrial ambitions rise—driven in part by its expanding oil and gas sector—the country’s infrastructure must evolve to meet growing logistical demands. One such development is the transformation of a key port facility in South America, which has recently undergone critical underwater repairs led by Glenn Industrial Group LLC.

Meeting the Challenge of Hidden Corrosion

Tasked with revitalizing the submerged structures at the docks, Glenn Industrial Group uncovered significant internal corrosion across various structural components—including monotube piles, cylindrical piles, and sheet piling. What made the situation particularly complex was that much of the damage had been concealed behind degraded protective coatings. The root causes? Persistent freshwater exposure, microbial activity, and coating failure—all of which accelerated the deterioration of the infrastructure.

Comprehensive Structural Rehabilitation

To address these issues, Glenn deployed a full-spectrum underwater repair plan:

  • Surface preparation and structural reinforcement to ensure a clean and strong base.

  • Installation of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) forms to strengthen and shape compromised areas.

  • Injection of specialized underwater grout for added stability.

  • Encapsulation with Denso Wrap, providing a robust, corrosion-resistant shield for long-term protection.

Restoring Cathodic Protection with Over 360 Magnesium Anodes

One of the pivotal components of the repair was restoring the cathodic protection system. Over 360 magnesium sacrificial anodes were expertly wet-welded to the steel structures by certified underwater welders. Each anode was then coated with marine-grade epoxy for enhanced performance and longevity. These anodes play a vital role by corroding in place of the steel, thus preserving the structural integrity of the docks for years to come.

Additionally, Glenn Industrial Group removed debris from the riverbed, ensuring full accessibility to all damaged zones and enabling thorough, high-quality repairs.

Navigating Harsh Conditions

This complex operation was conducted in the face of natural adversities, including strong river currents and tidal fluctuations of up to six feet—occurring twice daily. One especially challenging area, Dolphin F, presented severe steel loss, but the Glenn team’s expertise and determination ensured successful repair even under these tough conditions.

Securing Suriname’s Industrial Future

With the completion of this project, the revitalized port facility is now well-positioned to support Suriname’s industrial trajectory. Thanks to Glenn Industrial Group’s rigorous repair strategies and commitment to excellence, the dock infrastructure is now safer, stronger, and ready for the future.
