Project Spotlight: Post-Hurricane Helene Recovery at South Carolina Hydroelectric Plant
GREAT FALLS, SOUTH CAROLINA – In response to Hurricane Helene and widespread regional flooding, Glenn Industrial Group, LLC has mobilized emergency infrastructure support at a hydroelectric facility in South Carolina. The team is currently executing a multi-phase recovery effort to stabilize intake systems, remove flood debris, and restore operational integrity to the plant.
Phase 1: ROV Inspection and Submerged Assessment
The recovery operation began with a remote inspection of submerged structures using ROV systems to identify displaced components and locate underwater hazards. This step allowed Glenn’s team to safely assess:
Trash rack damage
Obstructed intake pathways
Missing stop log components
Debris concentrations near unit bays
The use of ROVs enabled fast, low-risk reconnaissance in dynamic water conditions, allowing precise targeting of subsequent dive and crane operations.
Phase 2: Dive Mobilization and Trash Rack Reinstallation
A crane barge and commercial dive crew are now on-site to reposition and reinstall a damaged section of the facility’s trash rack system. Simultaneously, stop logs are being inserted to enable controlled dewatering and internal structural evaluation.
This approach allows safe access to critical work zones while minimizing downtime and environmental disruption.
Phase 3: Confined Space Access and Debris Removal
Inside the facility, Glenn’s team has deployed confined space rescue personnel, installed scaffolding, and is currently conducting an internal damage survey. Flood debris is being cleared from both above and below the waterline to reestablish safe operating conditions across intake and turbine areas.
All work is performed under strict OSHA and site-specific safety protocols, with air monitoring, retrieval systems, and confined space entry teams on standby.
Supporting Fast, Safe Infrastructure Recovery
This recovery effort highlights Glenn Industrial Group’s ability to respond rapidly to extreme events with integrated dive, ROV, crane, and confined space capabilities. Work is progressing on schedule, ensuring critical energy infrastructure returns to service safely and without compromise.
